Newark Liberty International Airport Spotting
NOTE : Spotting at Newark Liberty International Airport is extremely risky and daring. The security is very tough and aggressive. Therefore, planespotting (taking video or photo of airport operations and aircraft) is not encouraged. REMEMBER TO TAKE YOUR ID. Spot here at your own risk!
Spot A : IKEA Elizabeth Parking Lot
Views : Landings on Runway 4R and 4L
Departures on Runway 22R and 22L
Security : The security at IKEA is known to be extremely tough and do not like plane-spotters. They prevent you from using cameras to take pictures and videos of aircraft at the airport. They have security cars circulating their parking lot often so be careful with security. This spot is best for registration spotting and simply watching airplanes without photography. An incident recently occured, and going to IKEA to just watch the airplanes is extremely discouraged - don't go here unless you want a visit from the police.
Obstructions : Touchdown and rotation is not visible at this spot, because there is a tall fence in the way, and it is across the airport being separated by the 14 lane New Jersey Turnpike.

Spot C : Virgin Atlantic Cargo Area Parking Lot - Airis Road
Views : Landings on Runway 22L and 22R
Departures on Runway 4L and 4R
Aircraft taxiing to Runway 22R for departure
Aircraft taxiing after landing on Runway 4R
Close up taxi's on Taxiway Zulu to full length departures on 22R
Security : There are security cars traveling the perimeter of the airport inside the fence. They will stop and tell you that taking pictures of the planes are not allowed.
Obstructions : For landings on RWY22L, you get side views but a fence blocks the view partially. For RWY22R departures, a fence also blocks the view but you can stick your camera lens through the holes for clear views. This also applies for RWY4L departures, where you get a head on/side view for takeoff rotation, and the opposite for RWY22R. Landings on 4R are visible but you have to have a VERY good zoom amount to film. Heat haze prevents good pictures.

Spot B : Economy Parking Lot P4
Views : Landings on Runway 29/11
Landings on Runway 22L (see obstructions)
Gate push-in and push-out to parts of Terminal C
For landings on 22L/R, the New York City skyline is your background
For 29 Landings, you can get a nice picture with the World Trade Center in the background when the aircraft are on final.
Security : On the roof, there is usually no security due to barely any cars on that level.
Obstructions : For landings on 22L, a building blocks the touchdown view for most aircraft unless they land perfectly or early. After the touchdown, your view is completely obscured. You need FULL zoom for this, around 140x. You cannot hear the sound of the aircraft.

Spot D: Economy Parking Lot P6
Views : Landings on Runway 22L and 22R
Departures on Runway 4L and 4R
Security : There are security cars traveling the perimeter of the airport inside the fence, and every 45 minutes or so there are security cars travelling inside the lot to check for activity. There are also the airport shuttle buses that go around this lot. They will report you and the security will come to tell you that taking pictures of airplanes is not allowed. Beware the undercover cop(s) that circle around inside the lot...they will show you your badge and kick you out - bring your ID.
Obstructions : For landings on RWY22L, you get side/belly views that are very close to you. For RWY22R departures, a fence also blocks the view but you can stick your camera lens through the holes for clear views - it is more of a behind/side view. This also goes for RWY4L departures, where you get a head on/side view for takeoff rotation.
